Apollo Hospitals Bengaluru Earns India’s First Dual AHA Certification for Stroke and Cardiac Emergency Care

Apollo Hospitals, Bengaluru has achieved a major healthcare milestone by becoming the first hospital in India to receive dual certification from the American Heart Association® (AHA) as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Comprehensive Chest Pain Center. The recognition highlights the hospital’s capability to deliver advanced, coordinated emergency care for patients suffering from stroke and acute cardiac events.

The certifications were awarded after an independent assessment of the hospital’s emergency response systems, clinical protocols and multidisciplinary coordination from the moment a patient arrives until diagnosis, treatment and critical care. Unlike certifications that focus on individual departments, the AHA evaluates the hospital’s overall readiness to manage time-sensitive emergencies through integrated care pathways.

The achievement comes at a time when stroke and cardiovascular diseases continue to pose a significant public health challenge in India. Stroke is the country’s fourth leading cause of death and the fifth leading cause of disability, while cardiovascular diseases account for nearly 36% of deaths among adults between 30 and 69 years of age. In Karnataka alone, an estimated 500,000 people are living with stroke, placing considerable pressure on the healthcare system.

Further highlighting the growing risk, Apollo Hospitals’ Health of the Nation 2026 report revealed that 45% of symptom-free individuals who underwent coronary calcium scoring showed signs of coronary artery calcification, indicating that serious heart disease can often remain undetected until a medical emergency occurs.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center certification is awarded to hospitals capable of managing complex stroke cases with advanced imaging, expert neurological care, emergency interventions and round-the-clock monitoring. The Comprehensive Chest Pain Center certification recognises hospitals that can rapidly diagnose and treat acute coronary syndromes, including ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), where immediate restoration of blood flow is essential.

D.P. Suresh, M.D., FAHA, Incoming Chair of the American Heart Association’s International Committee, said, “For people experiencing stroke or an acute heart attack, timely diagnosis and coordinated treatment can significantly influence recovery. The American Heart Association’s certification programmes recognise hospitals that demonstrate consistent adherence to internationally accepted standards across the continuum of emergency care. Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore has successfully met the rigorous requirements for both Comprehensive Stroke Center and Comprehensive Chest Pain Center certification.”

Dr. A.N. Venkatesh, Senior Consultant, Head and Regional Director, Emergency Departments, Apollo Hospitals, Karnataka, said, “When someone arrives with symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, every clinical decision must be made quickly and in a coordinated sequence. That demands experienced teams, clearly defined treatment pathways and seamless collaboration across specialties. This milestone reflects years of strengthening our emergency response processes so that patients receive the right intervention at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Akshay Oleti, CEO, Apollo Hospitals, Karnataka Region, added, “Clinical excellence today extends beyond medical expertise to the strength of the systems that support patient care. Benchmarking against internationally recognised standards encourages continuous improvement, greater consistency in care delivery and stronger organisational readiness during medical emergencies. This achievement reinforces our focus on building resilient care models that can respond effectively when every minute matters.”

The American Heart Association’s certification programme promotes internationally accepted standards for managing stroke and cardiac emergencies. It evaluates emergency preparedness, clinical governance, multidisciplinary teamwork and continuous quality improvement to help hospitals strengthen patient outcomes during life-threatening situations.

With this dual AHA certification, Apollo Hospitals, Bengaluru has set a new benchmark for emergency cardiac and stroke care in India. The recognition reflects the growing importance of well-coordinated clinical systems and rapid response protocols in improving survival rates and patient recovery during critical medical emergencies.
