A 91-year-old man has successfully undergone surgery for kidney cancer at Kamineni Hospitals, highlighting how carefully evaluated elderly patients can benefit from advanced cancer treatment.
The patient, Sri Subhramanyam, a retired Central Government employee, was diagnosed with a large tumour in his right kidney caused by Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), a common form of kidney cancer. After a detailed medical assessment, a multidisciplinary team concluded that he was fit to undergo surgery despite the increased risks associated with his age.
Doctors performed a radical nephrectomy, a procedure that involves removing the entire cancer-affected kidney. The operation was led by Dr. G. Avinash Reddy, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, with support from specialists in anaesthesia, intensive care, nursing and physiotherapy. During the surgery, the team carefully worked around major blood vessels, including the inferior vena cava, while isolating the renal artery and vein to safely remove the kidney with minimal blood loss.
According to the hospital, the patient received comprehensive post-operative care that included continuous monitoring of heart and kidney function, specialised respiratory support, early mobilisation and personalised pain management. He is recovering well, and his remaining kidney is functioning normally.
Hospital officials stated that the case demonstrates that treatment decisions for cancer should be guided by a patient’s overall medical condition rather than age alone. They also noted that careful planning, appropriate patient selection and coordinated care from multiple specialties can help achieve favourable outcomes even in patients over 90 years of age.
The successful surgery reflects the advances in modern cancer care and surgical techniques that are making complex procedures safer for elderly patients. With timely diagnosis, thorough evaluation and expert multidisciplinary care, age alone need not prevent eligible patients from receiving potentially life-saving treatment.
