Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, has completed more than 2,000 robotic-assisted orthopaedic procedures, marking a major milestone in its technology-enabled joint replacement programme.
The procedures include total and partial knee replacements as well as total hip replacements. The achievement reflects the hospital’s growing experience in using robotic technology alongside clinical expertise to support personalised joint replacement care.
The hospital’s programme uses Mako® SmartRobotics™ from Stryker, combined with 3D CT-based imaging and detailed pre-operative planning. This approach provides surgeons with a comprehensive view of the patient’s anatomy and helps them develop a procedure tailored to individual clinical requirements. The robotic arm assists in carrying out the planned procedure, while all treatment decisions and surgical judgement remain with the operating surgeon.
Robotic assistance can support greater precision in knee and hip replacement procedures, including bone preparation and implant positioning. It may also help surgeons achieve accurate alignment and consistency during surgery and support recovery and implant longevity. The technology can be particularly useful in complex joint replacement cases by providing additional anatomical and planning information.
The milestone was highlighted during an event featuring keynote addresses from senior orthopaedic robotic surgeons Dr Arun Kannan, Dr Kornad Kosygan, Dr Kunal Patel, Dr Navaladi Shankar, Dr Vijay Kishore Reddy and Dr Madhan Thiruvengada. The speakers discussed the evolution of robotic-assisted joint replacement and the role of technology in delivering more precise and patient-specific care.
