Advanced Heart and Lung Transplant Centre Opens in Gurugram

A cutting-edge heart and lung transplant facility has been inaugurated at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, bringing advanced care closer to patients across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, and neighbouring regions.

The programme will be led by Dr. Sandeep Attawar, founder-director and chair of thoracic organ transplants and mechanical circulatory support at KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad, who will oversee and guide the centre’s operations.

Onkar S. Kanwar, chairman of Artemis Hospitals, emphasized the initiative’s larger mission:
“By launching the Heart and Lung Transplant Centre in Gurugram, we are sparing families in north India the ordeal of travelling long distances for transplants. Beyond ensuring survival, our aim is to restore dignity, hope, and quality of life.”

Dr. Devlina Chakravarty, managing director of Artemis Hospital, highlighted that the centre is designed to be a lifeline for patients who, until now, had limited access to transplant expertise in the region.
“Patients from north and northwest India earlier had to travel to southern states for such procedures. This centre will change that. It also allows patients to register in two states simultaneously, improving donor availability and increasing the likelihood of timely transplants,” she explained.

Dr. Attawar added that the facility will merge a comprehensive transplant programme with the logistical advantages of Gurugram’s location in the National Capital Region.
“This proximity will cut down travel delays, simplify coordination, and ultimately improve patient outcomes,” he said.

The centre is equipped with advanced mechanical circulatory support systems such as ECMO and LVAD devices, which can serve as interim support before a transplant or as long-term therapy. Patients will receive end-to-end care—from pre-transplant evaluations for advanced heart and lung failure to surgery, post-transplant monitoring, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up—to help them transition into a healthier life.
