New Delhi: Health experts have attributed the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across Southeast Asia to seasonal flu patterns, downplaying fears of a major resurgence.
Singapore reported a 28% jump in weekly infections, while Hong Kong saw its highest weekly death toll in a year. Similar trends are being observed in China and Thailand, driven by Omicron subvariants like JN.1 and LF.7.
In India, only 257 active cases were reported as of May 19, and the Health Ministry confirmed the situation remains under control.
Experts emphasize that most current cases are mild, thanks to widespread immunity from vaccinations and past infections. They urge continued hygiene practices to limit the spread.
