Lucknow, India — The state of Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to establish itself as a premier destination for wellness travel, with the state tourism department inviting entrepreneurs, institutions and individuals to launch wellness centres and resorts under its Tourism Policy 2022.
According to Jaiveer Singh, the Tourism and Culture Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the initiative comes as wellness-oriented living and natural therapeutic experiences are increasingly in demand. He emphasised that the state’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage offers a unique platform to pair modern wellness practices with traditional Indian systems of healing.
Under the Tourism Policy 2022, a Wellness Centre must comprise at least five therapy rooms offering AYUSH-based treatments.
A Wellness Resort requires a minimum of one acre of land, with at least 20 guest rooms and dedicated therapy zones providing these services.
Wellness tourism is being integrated with the state’s spiritual travel circuits — including locations such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura‑Vrindavan, Chitrakoot, Sarnath, Shravasti and Kapilvastu — enabling these destinations to double as wellness hubs.
An International Yoga Conclave will be held annually to reinforce the state’s ambition to be acknowledged globally as a wellness tourism hotspot.
To boost investment in this sector, entrepreneurs setting up eligible wellness facilities in the state can access a range of incentives under the policy — including capital investment assistance, interest reimbursements, stamp-duty exemptions, waiver of land-conversion and development charges, and support for employment generation.
This push is expected to open up new employment opportunities across yoga instruction, Ayurvedic therapy, naturopathy, wellness hospitality, diet counselling and tourism management — while also promoting local herbs, organic products and heritage-based healing practices rooted in Uttar Pradesh’s tradition.
By linking wellness with spirituality and sustainable tourism, Uttar Pradesh aims to lay the foundation for a healthier, more mindful travel future — where visitors can enjoy not just the scenic and cultural riches of the state, but also the serenity, balance and rejuvenation such an approach brings.
