Manipal Hospitals’ Rs 6,300 Crore Acquisition of Sahyadri Hospitals Marks Major Expansion in India’s Healthcare Sector

In a major move that reshapes India’s private healthcare landscape, Manipal Hospitals has agreed to acquire Sahyadri Hospitals in a deal valued at approximately Rs 6,300 crore. The transaction significantly strengthens the hospital group’s presence in western India while reinforcing its long-term growth strategy.

The acquisition brings 11 hospitals in Maharashtra under the Manipal Hospitals network, increasing its nationwide portfolio to 49 hospitals with nearly 12,000 beds. The expanded footprint is expected to enhance the group’s ability to deliver advanced medical care across key urban centres as well as emerging regional markets.

Founded in Pune, Sahyadri Hospitals is among Maharashtra’s leading private healthcare providers, operating more than 1,400 beds across Pune, Nashik, Ahilya Nagar, and Karad. The hospital chain has been owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (OTPP) since 2022, when the Canadian pension fund acquired a majority stake.

By integrating Sahyadri Hospitals into its network, Manipal Hospitals is set to deepen its reach in one of India’s fastest-growing healthcare markets. The expanded presence is expected to improve access to tertiary and quaternary care while supporting more seamless healthcare delivery across the state.

The larger network also positions the healthcare provider to strengthen investments in specialized clinical programmes, advanced medical technologies, digital health solutions, and integrated patient services. Industry observers believe the increased scale could further enhance the group’s competitive position as it advances its future growth plans, including a potential initial public offering (IPO).

Backed by Singapore-based investment firm Temasek, Manipal Hospitals has steadily expanded through a series of strategic acquisitions over the past few years. The latest deal reflects the company’s continued focus on building a stronger pan-India healthcare network capable of serving a growing patient population.

The acquisition of Sahyadri Hospitals marks another significant milestone in the ongoing consolidation of India’s private healthcare sector. By expanding its presence in Maharashtra and increasing its nationwide capacity, Manipal Hospitals is strengthening its ability to deliver advanced healthcare services while positioning itself for sustained long-term growth in an increasingly competitive market.
