West Bengal is set to witness a major boost in healthcare infrastructure following the state government’s announcement of several new medical projects spanning hospital development and medical education. The announcement was made during a programme at the state secretariat, Nabanna, where Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state government has signed an agreement with the Adani Group for the development of a 2,000-bed hospital. Land for the project has already been allotted.
The proposed facility will adopt a dual-care model. Half of its capacity—1,000 beds—will be dedicated to providing free treatment to patients from economically weaker sections, while the remaining 1,000 beds will function as paid services, supporting advanced treatments, high-end medical equipment, and specialized clinical care.
The hospital project follows the Adani Group’s earlier proposal to invest at least INR 2,500 crore in creating a healthcare city in New Town’s Action Area II. Once operational, it will become the conglomerate’s third major healthcare initiative in the country after its projects in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Officials expect the upcoming institution to strengthen access to complex and specialized healthcare services across Eastern India. The hospital is planned with modern diagnostic facilities, state-of-the-art operation theatres, and a range of super-specialty departments designed to manage advanced medical cases.
Beyond expanding patient care, the project is also expected to generate substantial employment across the healthcare sector, creating opportunities for doctors, nurses, technicians, and other allied medical professionals. The combination of free and paid services is intended to make the hospital financially sustainable while ensuring quality treatment remains accessible to underprivileged patients.
The hospital announcement forms part of a wider healthcare development strategy unveiled by the state government. Alongside infrastructure expansion, West Bengal is also focusing on strengthening medical education by establishing four new medical colleges in Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Paschim Bardhaman, and Dakshin Dinajpur. The new institutions are expected to increase the state’s capacity to train future healthcare professionals while improving educational opportunities in regions that have long lacked medical colleges.
In another key announcement, the Chief Minister said that a proposal has been submitted for setting up an additional AIIMS in North Bengal, a move aimed at further enhancing the availability of advanced healthcare services in the northern part of the state.
With plans for a new large-scale hospital, expanded medical education infrastructure, and a proposed AIIMS for North Bengal, West Bengal is taking significant steps toward strengthening its healthcare ecosystem.
