Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, has become the fastest hospital in India to complete 3,000 robot-assisted surgeries using the advanced Da Vinci Xi surgical system. The milestone highlights the hospital’s growing expertise in robotic surgery and its commitment to delivering precision-driven, minimally invasive treatment across multiple medical specialties.
The achievement was celebrated at a special event in Bengaluru attended by Karnataka’s Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Shri U.T. Khader, who participated as the Chief Guest.
Since launching its robotic surgery programme in 2018, the hospital has expanded its robotic surgical services across 12 specialties, including Urology, Kidney Transplantation, Gynaecology, Surgical Oncology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and ENT. Fortis Bannerghatta is among the few hospitals in the country equipped with two Da Vinci Xi robotic systems at a single facility, enabling surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision and efficiency.
The hospital also introduced India’s first Total Robot Enabled and Assisted Transplant (TREAT) Programme, a robotic kidney transplant initiative that integrates robotic technology for both donor and recipient surgeries.
One of the recent beneficiaries of the programme was 77-year-old Pattabhiraman Venkatraman, who sought treatment for persistent urinary problems. After detailed investigations, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite his age and multiple health conditions, he successfully underwent a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy performed by Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy and his team. The minimally invasive procedure involved removing the cancerous prostate gland and nearby lymph nodes. He recovered well and was discharged in stable condition.
The hospital also successfully treated 39-year-old Vaishnavi Vinay, who had been experiencing severe menstrual pain and abnormal bleeding. After conservative treatment failed to provide relief, she underwent a robot-assisted hysterectomy led by Dr. Rubina Shanawaz and her team. The procedure removed the uterus and both fallopian tubes while preserving the ovaries, resulting in minimal blood loss, reduced pain and a quicker recovery.
In another case demonstrating its expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Fortis treated 49-year-old Azim Surendra Dattani from Tanzania, who presented with recurring chest pain. Doctors diagnosed him with complex coronary artery disease and performed a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery involving three grafts through small incisions. The procedure, led by Dr. Sudarshan GT and his team, helped minimise surgical trauma and supported a faster recovery. He was discharged in stable condition.
