Aragonda, Andhra Pradesh: Expanding access to specialised orthopaedic treatment beyond major urban centres, Apollo Hospitals Aragonda has performed 1,000 total knee replacement surgeries, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to deliver advanced surgical care in a rural setting.
Established in 2000 by Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder-Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, the 50-bed facility has treated more than 1.67 lakh patients and conducted over 12,000 surgeries across various specialities.
The hospital’s knee replacement programme is led by an orthopaedic team comprising Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy, Dr. Vijay Kishore Kondreddy and Dr. Kunal Patel. The programme has recorded steady growth, crossing 100 procedures in 2019, 500 in 2022 and reaching the 1,000-surgery mark in 2026. The hospital has also performed 19 knee replacement procedures in a single day.
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure in which damaged portions of the knee joint are replaced with artificial implants. It is generally recommended for patients with advanced joint damage who continue to experience persistent pain and restricted mobility despite non-surgical treatment. The decision to undergo surgery depends on the patient’s overall health, severity of joint damage and individual treatment requirements.
Commenting on the milestone, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy underscored the need to make quality healthcare more accessible to rural populations. He also highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare and identifying potential health risks at an early stage.
The hospital’s community healthcare initiatives are closely linked to Apollo Foundation’s Total Health programme, introduced in 2013. The initiative adopts a broader approach to community development by integrating healthcare with nutrition, education, access to safe drinking water, skill development and livelihood support. Its healthcare services include primary care, diagnostic facilities, telemedicine, mobile medical units and cancer screening.
The completion of 1,000 knee replacement surgeries highlights Apollo Hospitals Aragonda’s growing contribution to specialised orthopaedic care in rural Andhra Pradesh. The milestone also reflects the importance of strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to advanced surgical treatments beyond metropolitan cities.
