In a significant step towards strengthening Maharashtra’s healthcare infrastructure, the state government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cleveland Clinic, Brookfield Asset Management and Arodhan Health City to establish the Navi Mumbai International MediCity (NMIMC). The integrated healthcare project is expected to attract investments worth USD 1.2 billion.
Announcing the development on Wednesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the initiative marks an important milestone in Maharashtra’s journey to becoming a global centre for healthcare and medical innovation. The project is also expected to create around 10,000 employment opportunities.
Planned across 250 acres in Navi Mumbai, the proposed MediCity will be led by Cleveland Clinic, the internationally renowned healthcare institution based in Ohio, United States. The facility aims to combine advanced patient care, medical education, research, innovation, genomics and artificial intelligence-driven healthcare solutions within a single ecosystem.
According to Fadnavis, the project is envisioned as more than just a healthcare infrastructure initiative. He noted that it is designed to serve as a comprehensive platform that will accelerate medical research, foster innovation and contribute to the advancement of healthcare sciences in India.
The MoU signing ceremony witnessed the presence of key representatives from partner organisations, including Cleveland Clinic Chief Executive Officer Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine Dr. Sameer Kapadia, Cleveland Clinic President for Emerging Markets Dr. Falcone, and Lakshmi Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal and a member of Cleveland Clinic’s Board. Senior officials from the Maharashtra government, Brookfield Asset Management, Arodhan Health City, and leaders from the healthcare sector also attended the event.
The Navi Mumbai International MediCity is expected to emerge as a globally connected healthcare ecosystem that supports not only specialised clinical services but also research activities, skill development and the training of future healthcare professionals. The project will particularly focus on emerging areas such as genomics and AI-enabled healthcare innovation.
Officials stated that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Heal in India” vision, which seeks to position the country as a preferred destination for quality healthcare, medical tourism, research and innovation. By attracting global expertise and investments, the project is expected to contribute significantly to this national objective.
With the participation of leading international healthcare institutions and investors, the Navi Mumbai International MediCity has the potential to transform Maharashtra’s healthcare landscape. Once operational, the project could play a pivotal role in enhancing medical excellence, driving innovation and reinforcing India’s growing stature in the global healthcare sector.
