Surgeons at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital Remove 28.6-Kg Abdominal Tumour in Complex Surgery

A major surgical intervention at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur has enabled doctors to remove a 28.6-kg retroperitoneal sarcoma from a 59-year-old woman. The procedure, which lasted approximately three hours, involved separating the massive growth from several vital organs and major blood vessels.

The patient had been struggling with the condition for nearly three years. As the tumour progressively increased in size, her ability to walk and carry out routine physical activities became severely restricted. She had approached multiple healthcare facilities for treatment, but the complexity of the case had made surgery a considerable challenge.

Medical examinations at SMS Hospital revealed the extent of the growth, prompting specialists to evaluate the possibility of surgical removal.

Following consultation with the oncology department, the hospital’s surgical team proceeded with the operation under the leadership of Dr Jeevan Kankaria, Senior Professor, Department of General Surgery.

The tumour’s location presented several technical difficulties. The ureter, which carries urine from the kidney to the bladder, was positioned in front of the mass and required careful protection during dissection.

Additionally, the growth was attached to the intestines, liver, pancreas, urinary bladder and major arteries, making the procedure particularly demanding.

Surgeons meticulously separated the tumour from these surrounding structures while safeguarding the affected organs and blood vessels. The operation was completed in around three hours, achieving the successful removal of the entire 28.6-kg mass.

Following the procedure, the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit for close postoperative observation. Her condition remained stable, and doctors reported satisfactory progress. She was subsequently shifted to the general ward.

The entire treatment was provided free of charge under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS).

The surgical team included Dr Devendra Saini, Dr Garima, Dr Ashima, Dr Geetansh, Dr Aakash, Dr Devansh, Dr Rajat and Dr Himanshu. The anaesthesia team comprised Dr Sushil Bhati, Dr Sunil Chauhan, Dr Kanchan, Dr Deendayal and Dr Divya Bhatnagar. Nursing staff member Yunus Ali also played an important role in supporting the procedure.

The successful treatment of this complex case highlights the importance of specialised surgical expertise, coordinated clinical teams and access to advanced hospital care. The availability of treatment under RGHS also underscores the role of government healthcare programmes in supporting patients requiring complex medical interventions.
