Children needing heart surgery can avail themselves of free treatment at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, under the institute’s annual social health programme.
The initiative will begin on August 13, 2026. Parents and guardians do not need to take a prior appointment. Children can directly visit NIMS for screening and consultation, which will be conducted on a walk-in basis.
Medical priority will be decided after clinical assessment. Children diagnosed with conditions requiring surgery will undergo the necessary procedures at no cost after completing the required tests and evaluations.
Where and when to visit
Parents can approach the CT Surgery Office on the first floor of the Old Block at NIMS. The facility will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Five-year initiative
NIMS has been running the programme for the past five years to extend specialised cardiac treatment to children who need surgery but may face difficulties accessing such care.
The surgeries will be performed under the supervision of Amaresh Rao, Head of the Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, along with technical experts from the UK and London-based paediatric cardiac surgeon Ramana Dhannapuneni.
The initiative offers children access to specialised cardiac surgery without the financial burden of treatment. By combining NIMS’ medical expertise with support from international specialists, the programme aims to help more children receive timely heart care.
