Apollo Hospitals has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chennai-based aerospace start-up The ePlane Company to explore the development of India’s first electric air ambulance network. The initiative aims to strengthen emergency medical transportation by integrating electric aircraft and medical drones into Apollo Hospitals’ healthcare ecosystem.
The proposed collaboration seeks to improve access to advanced medical care by enabling faster transportation of critically ill patients, particularly in remote locations and congested urban centres where timely treatment can be challenging. The project also aims to support quicker movement of donor organs, blood, medicines, vaccines, and other essential medical supplies.
The partnership brings together The ePlane Company’s electric aviation and drone technologies with Apollo Hospitals’ extensive hospital network and its 1066 ambulance service. By combining these capabilities, the organizations intend to reduce transportation delays and enhance emergency response during time-sensitive medical situations such as trauma, stroke, cardiac emergencies, and organ transplantation, where rapid intervention can significantly improve survival rates.
Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder and Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Too many lives in India are lost because emergency medical help cannot reach patients in time.” He added that the partnership with The ePlane Company reflects Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to extending quality healthcare services to every part of the country, including underserved and remote communities.
Prof. Satya Chakravarthy, Founder & CTO, The ePlane Company, said, “Every minute is critical during a medical emergency.” He noted that the collaboration will explore the potential of electric aircraft and medical drones to reduce the time taken to transport patients from the site of an accident to specialised treatment centres, especially for people living far from advanced trauma care facilities.
As part of the initiative, the two organisations will also assess the feasibility of deploying The ePlane Company’s e200X electric air ambulance platform and Amber Wings medical drones, subject to regulatory approvals and operational requirements.
If successfully implemented, the partnership could represent a major advancement in India’s emergency healthcare infrastructure. By combining sustainable aviation technology with advanced medical transport solutions, Apollo Hospitals and The ePlane Company aim to create a faster, more efficient, and technology-driven emergency response network capable of reaching patients when every second counts.
