India Becomes Global Hub for Health Innovation, Says Minister Anupriya Patel

India has rapidly positioned itself as a global powerhouse in health innovation over the last decade, according to Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel. Speaking at the 114th Foundation Day celebration of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in New Delhi, she emphasized that India’s health research ecosystem has evolved into one of the most vibrant and impactful in the world.

Highlighting the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Patel noted that health research has become a key pillar of Viksit Bharat—a vision built on self-reliance, innovation, and equity. She praised India’s expanding network of research institutions and innovation hubs for transforming discoveries into real-world healthcare solutions through effective public-private collaborations.

“India’s research institutions have proven how partnerships between the public and private sectors can convert discovery into delivery, embodying the spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Prayas, Sabka Vishwas,” the Minister said.

Patel also underscored the ongoing collaboration between the Department of Health Research and ICMR in tackling national and global health priorities. These include combating antimicrobial resistance, managing rare diseases, addressing climate-related health risks, and enhancing One Health preparedness—a holistic approach linking human, animal, and environmental health.

She further highlighted ICMR’s extensive innovation ecosystem, including its Centres of Excellence, the Intent Clinical Trial Network, and the MedTech Mitra initiative. These platforms have collectively supported the development of over 27 indigenous medical technologies, driving affordable and accessible healthcare innovations from laboratory research to practical application.

As part of the event, the Minister also unveiled new Assistive Technology Guidelines and an Assessment Kit, a joint initiative by IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi, developed with financial support from ICMR. The launch marks another milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to integrate cutting-edge research with inclusive and affordable healthcare delivery.
