Apollo Hospitals Achieves 5,000 Liver Transplants, Setting a Historic Benchmark in Indian Healthcare

Apollo Hospitals Group has reached a groundbreaking milestone in medical excellence — successfully completing 5,000 liver transplants under its renowned Apollo Liver Transplant Program. This achievement makes Apollo the first healthcare group in India and South Asia to attain such a distinction, underscoring over 25 years of pioneering innovation, compassionate care, and global impact in liver transplantation.

Since performing India’s first successful pediatric liver transplant on November 15, 1998, Apollo Hospitals has been redefining liver care across Asia. The first recipient, Sanjay — a 20-month-old infant diagnosed with biliary atresia — not only survived the critical procedure but went on to become a doctor and father, symbolizing Apollo’s enduring commitment to transforming lives through advanced healthcare.

Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder & Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, said:

“This achievement reflects our unyielding commitment to redefine what is possible in Indian healthcare. When we celebrated our first transplant in 1998, I dreamed of a future where every patient in need could access world-class solutions, regardless of geography. Surpassing the 5,000-liver transplant milestone is a testament to that vision and a tribute to the relentless spirit of our passionate clinicians and staff.”

Over the past two decades, the Apollo Liver Transplant Program has consistently set new benchmarks in complex medical procedures — performing ABO-incompatible and combined liver–kidney transplants for both adults and children, including infants as young as four months old weighing only 3.5 kilograms. In recognition of its outstanding national contribution, the Government of India honored Apollo’s program with a commemorative postal stamp — a distinction unique in the country’s healthcare history.

Dr. Madhu Sasidhar, President and CEO of Apollo Hospitals Group, remarked:

“We are immensely proud to see how the program’s impact extends beyond numbers — from training the next generation of transplant surgeons, to conducting groundbreaking research and consistently setting new clinical benchmarks. These achievements are a source of inspiration and aspiration not just for Apollo, but for all of Indian medicine.”

From November 15, 1998, to October 10, 2025, Apollo performed 5,001 transplants, including 4,391 adult and 611 pediatric cases, along with 700 deceased donor and 73 combined liver–kidney transplants. With a clinical success rate exceeding 90%, Apollo’s liver transplant program is recognized among the best in the world, driven by advanced medical technology, a multidisciplinary approach, and an extensive national network of expert transplant coordinators.

Pioneering the Future of Transplant Medicine

Apollo Hospitals’ liver transplant program has earned global recognition for its comprehensive and patient-centric approach — addressing complex liver and multi-organ diseases in both adults and children. The program emphasizes affordability, post-transplant rehabilitation, and long-term patient recovery, ensuring that advanced care remains accessible to all.

Beyond clinical excellence, Apollo has established international collaborations through fellowships, surgeon training programs, and standardized transplant protocols, extending its expertise across the Global South. These efforts have helped build and strengthen liver transplant capabilities in multiple countries, making organ transplantation safer, more efficient, and more accessible to patients worldwide.

This landmark accomplishment reinforces Apollo’s mission to democratize access to world-class healthcare, expand specialized transplant centers across India, and foster strategic global partnerships that combine training, technology, and shared standards of excellence.

With its 5,000th transplant, Apollo Hospitals reaffirms its vision to advance healthcare — one life at a time — and its commitment to ensuring that every patient, regardless of location, can access timely, world-class liver transplant care, the gold standard treatment for end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
