AIIMS Bhubaneswar has introduced a dedicated facility to encourage women to learn and practise breast self-examination, strengthening its breast cancer awareness efforts during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The portable Breast Self-Examination (BSE) booth was inaugurated at the institute’s Department of Medical Oncology by Executive Director Ashutosh Biswas. According to the institute, it is the first booth of its kind in India specifically designed to facilitate breast self-examination.
The facility offers women a private setting where they can learn the correct steps of BSE. Simple instructions displayed inside the booth are designed to help users understand the examination process and become more familiar with changes that may require medical attention.
Biswas stressed that detecting breast cancer at an early stage can significantly influence treatment outcomes. He also highlighted the importance of breast health awareness, regular self-examination and seeking medical advice promptly when unusual changes are noticed.
The initiative is intended to address hesitation around breast self-examination and encourage women to take a more proactive approach to their breast health. AIIMS Bhubaneswar also plans to develop a permanent BSE booth in the future.
Rising breast cancer burden
Sourav Kumar Mishra, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Oncology, pointed to the increasing need for greater awareness and early diagnosis. The department has treated approximately 1,000 breast cancer patients since it was established four years ago, with nearly 100 patients currently visiting the department each month.
He also raised concerns about the number of patients arriving with advanced-stage breast cancer and the growing incidence of the disease among younger women. The trends highlight the need for continued awareness initiatives, earlier diagnosis and timely access to appropriate treatment.
The department is also focusing on supportive approaches to cancer care. Yoga, meditation, regular exercise, music and relaxation techniques are being highlighted as ways to help patients manage stress, support emotional health and cope with the challenges of cancer treatment.
Focus on early detection
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October, promotes greater understanding of breast cancer while encouraging early detection, timely treatment and stronger support for patients and survivors. Initiatives such as the BSE booth can help make breast health awareness more accessible and encourage women to seek professional medical advice when they identify concerning changes.
