KIMS Mahadevapura Introduces Illumina 3D Technology for Advanced Deep Brain Stimulation

KIMS Hospitals, Mahadevapura, has introduced Illumina 3D™, an image-guided platform for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programming, in collaboration with Boston Scientific. The hospital is the first in India to introduce the technology, aimed at improving the precision and personalisation of DBS therapy for patients with complex movement disorders.

Image-Guided Approach to DBS Programming

Illumina 3D™ integrates medical imaging with intelligent algorithms to give clinicians a clearer view of how electrical stimulation interacts with specific brain structures. This information can support specialists in adjusting DBS settings according to the needs of individual patients.

DBS is an established treatment option for movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. However, finding the right stimulation settings can require detailed and patient-specific programming. An image-guided system can provide additional information to help clinicians refine therapy more precisely.

Supporting Personalised Neurological Care

The technology is expected to support a more data-driven approach to DBS management, particularly for patients whose symptoms are complex or challenging to control. By helping specialists visualise stimulation in relation to targeted areas of the brain, Illumina 3D™ is designed to facilitate more customised treatment planning.

The development also reflects the growing use of advanced imaging and neuromodulation technologies in the management of neurological disorders.

KIMS Expands Advanced Movement Disorder Care

The launch involved senior specialists from KIMS Hospitals, including Dr Guruprasad Hosurkar, Director & Lead Consultant in Neurology and Head of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Programme, and Dr Raghuram Gopalakrishnan, Director & Senior Consultant and Head of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.

Their expertise across neurology, movement disorders and functional neurosurgery contributes to KIMS Hospitals’ efforts to expand specialised treatment options for patients requiring advanced neurological care.

Advancing DBS Treatment in India

The introduction of Illumina 3D™ adds to KIMS Hospitals’ focus on bringing advanced neurological technologies to India. By combining imaging, intelligent algorithms and customised DBS programming, the platform is intended to support more precise treatment for Parkinson’s disease and other complex movement disorders.

The adoption of image-guided DBS programming marks a further move towards precision-based neurological care. As treatment becomes increasingly personalised, technologies such as Illumina 3D™ could help clinicians make more informed adjustments to DBS therapy and improve the management of complex movement disorders.
