A 100-year-old veteran ENT surgeon in Mumbai recently sought medical attention for persistent throat discomfort and difficulty swallowing, only to find himself on the other side of the doctor-patient relationship.
Dr A. C. Johari, who has practised ENT medicine in Mumbai for more than six decades, visited Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre after experiencing throat irritation, a foreign-body sensation and difficulty swallowing food.
Having trained at KEM Hospital and spent much of his professional life treating ENT conditions, Dr Johari was understandably concerned that his symptoms could indicate a more serious problem.
Doctors performed a video laryngoscopy to closely examine his throat and larynx. The procedure identified a small pouch-like abnormality in the pharyngeal region. It was found to be a benign condition, with no signs of an underlying serious disease.
The findings also allowed Dr Johari to see the examination himself, providing reassurance about the cause of his symptoms.
“When an ENT surgeon of Dr. Johari’s experience presents with symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, a foreign-body sensation or a persistent feeling of something being stuck in the throat, it is understandable that there may be concern about a more serious underlying condition. In his case, the video-laryngoscopy provided immediate clarity. The findings were reassuring and indicated a benign condition. It was particularly gratifying to see the relief when he could see the findings himself. Sometimes, timely examination can provide not just a diagnosis, but tremendous reassurance to a patient,” said Dr Divya Prabhat, consultant ENT Surgery at the hospital.
The case also featured an unusual connection between the two doctors. Several decades ago, Dr Johari had performed a sinus procedure on Dr Prabhat. Years later, their roles were reversed, with Dr Prabhat examining and treating her former doctor.
“Having spent my entire professional life examining and treating patients with ENT complaints, I know how symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or a sensation of something being stuck in the throat can create apprehensions. When I experienced these symptoms myself, I too wanted to know exactly what was happening. The video-laryngoscopy gave me that answer and, more importantly, the reassurance that there was nothing sinister. It was also remarkable to have the examination performed by a doctor whom I had treated five decades ago. Medicine can bring us full circle in the most unexpected ways,” said Dr Johari.
Following the examination, Dr Johari was advised medical management for the benign condition.
The case underlines the importance of seeking timely medical evaluation when symptoms such as persistent throat irritation, a lump or foreign-body sensation, or difficulty swallowing continue. While such symptoms can be worrying, they may also have benign causes, and appropriate assessment can provide both diagnosis and reassurance.
