Apollo Spectra Hospital advances breast cancer screening with AI-powered 3D mammography

Apollo Spectra Hospital, Alwarpet, has strengthened its breast care programme with the addition of the Hologic Selenia 3D AI Genius Mammography System and specialised breast ultrasound services. The expansion is designed to support earlier detection of breast cancer, improve diagnostic accuracy and enable more personalised treatment for women.

The new imaging capabilities combine artificial intelligence-assisted three-dimensional mammography with dedicated ultrasound evaluation, providing clinicians with enhanced tools to identify breast abnormalities at an early stage and improve clinical decision-making.

The development comes as breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in India. Tamil Nadu remains one of the country’s most affected states, reporting more than 700 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per 100,000 women. Within the state, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai continue to record some of the highest incidence rates, reinforcing the importance of regular screening, early diagnosis and increased public awareness.

The newly installed imaging platform creates a detailed three-dimensional view of the breast by combining multiple low-dose X-ray images captured from different angles. This approach enables doctors to detect suspicious lesions with greater precision, particularly in women with dense breast tissue, where conventional two-dimensional mammography may be less effective due to overlapping tissue.

According to the hospital, the AI-powered system can identify up to 41% more invasive breast cancers compared with traditional 2D mammography. It is also designed to reduce false-positive recalls by 15% to 40%, helping women avoid unnecessary follow-up investigations. The examination is completed in approximately 3.7 seconds, while maintaining radiation exposure comparable to that of a standard mammogram.

Commenting on the advancement, Dr. Selvi Radhakrishna, Senior Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chennai, Alwarpet, said, “Advanced imaging technologies enable us to detect abnormalities with greater confidence while making the screening process faster and more comfortable. When breast cancer is detected before it spreads to the lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate can be as high as 96%, highlighting the value of regular screening.”

With the integration of AI-powered 3D mammography and comprehensive breast ultrasound services, Apollo Spectra Hospital is expanding access to advanced breast cancer screening. The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on early diagnosis and timely intervention, which remain key to improving survival rates and treatment outcomes for women at risk of breast cancer.
