Aster CMI Hospital Unveils Karnataka’s First Pediatric Liver ICU ‘PEARL’

In a major boost to pediatric critical care, Aster CMI Hospital has introduced PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care), a first-of-its-kind Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit in Karnataka. The newly established unit is exclusively designed to treat children facing severe and life-threatening liver disorders, offering highly specialized and timely intervention.

The facility was formally inaugurated by M Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, alongside senior hospital officials and medical experts.

With PEARL, the hospital transitions from conventional ICU systems to a dedicated, liver-focused care model for children. Pediatric liver emergencies can worsen quickly, often leading to complications such as infections, organ dysfunction, metabolic imbalance, and neurological issues. Addressing these complexities requires a coordinated, expert-driven approach.

To meet this need, the unit combines advanced monitoring technology with a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric hepatologists, transplant surgeons, intensivists, anesthetists, infection specialists, and trained liver ICU nurses. This integrated setup ensures swift decision-making and continuous, precision-led care.

Highlighting the importance of timely intervention, N. Karthik Nagesh, Program Director – Pediatric Centre of Excellence, noted that early and targeted treatment can significantly influence outcomes in liver emergencies. He explained that PEARL enables doctors to act quickly while maintaining continuous, specialized care, improving recovery rates and, in some cases, avoiding the need for transplantation.

According to Sonal Asthana, Program Director for Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation, Aster’s liver program is among the largest in Karnataka, treating over 7,000 patients annually and performing more than 100 liver transplants each year in Bengaluru. A considerable share of these procedures addresses pediatric liver failure.

He also emphasized the hospital’s efforts to make transplants accessible to underprivileged children through cost-effective programs, further strengthening its comprehensive care approach.

Prashanth N, CEO – Aster Hospitals, Karnataka, stated that PEARL reflects the organization’s vision to elevate pediatric healthcare standards. By combining expert teams with a dedicated infrastructure, the hospital aims to deliver faster, more specialized, and holistic care for critically ill children.

Unlike traditional ICUs, PEARL is structured entirely around pediatric liver care needs. Every element—from monitoring systems to treatment protocols—is tailored specifically for young patients. This focused design supports early diagnosis, quicker intervention, and better clinical outcomes, potentially reducing the need for liver transplants in select cases.

The unit also prioritizes family involvement, offering clear communication, emotional support, and continuous guidance during critical treatment phases.

With PEARL, Aster CMI Hospital sets a new benchmark in pediatric liver care. By merging clinical expertise, advanced infrastructure, and compassionate support, the hospital is building a dedicated ecosystem aimed at improving survival and recovery outcomes for children across the region.

The launch of PEARL marks a crucial step forward in addressing complex pediatric liver conditions with precision and speed. By focusing on early intervention and specialized care, the initiative is poised to significantly improve outcomes while reinforcing the growing importance of dedicated pediatric subspecialty units in modern healthcare.
