Aster Medcity Performs Kerala’s First Total Ceramic Knee Replacement

A 53-year-old man from Ernakulam has undergone Kerala’s first total knee replacement using a fully ceramic knee implant at Aster Medcity, Kochi. The procedure introduces an advanced implant option for younger patients seeking a durable knee replacement that can support an active lifestyle.

The patient had been experiencing severe pain in his right knee for nearly three years. Over time, the condition began affecting his routine activities and caused a visible deformity in the knee. After evaluation at Aster Medcity, doctors recommended total knee replacement to correct the deformity, reduce pain and restore mobility.

Given the patient’s relatively young age, the orthopaedic team selected a total ceramic knee implant, an advanced knee replacement technology designed for long-term durability. The implant is expected to have a very long lifespan and may potentially last for the patient’s lifetime.

“For younger patients, the longevity of the implant is the biggest concern. The total ceramic knee has the lowest wear rate among all knee replacement materials, which significantly improves its chances of lasting a lifetime,” said Dr. Vijaya Mohan S, Senior Consultant and HOD, Orthopaedic Surgery, Aster Medcity, Kochi.

The procedure also involved improved instrumentation to achieve accurate alignment and balancing of the knee prosthesis. Ceramic is considered highly biocompatible and eliminates the risk of metal allergy. Its lightweight design, combined with improved alignment, is expected to support faster recovery of knee movement.

The milestone highlights the growing use of advanced joint-replacement technologies for younger patients, with a focus on durability, mobility and long-term quality of life.
