Dr Devi Shetty, renowned cardiac surgeon and founder of Narayana Health, has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) by the French government for his support to the French community in Bengaluru during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The honour was presented by the Consulate General of France in Bengaluru on Thursday, recognising his efforts to assist French nationals during one of the most challenging public health crises.
During the pandemic, Dr Shetty and Narayana Health extended support to the French Consulate and the wider French community through vaccination initiatives and logistical assistance. His accessibility, generosity and commitment to helping those in need were among the key reasons for the recognition.
Marc Lamy, Consul General of France in Bengaluru, said the award acknowledged Dr Shetty’s generosity and continued support to French nationals in the city. He also highlighted how his contribution demonstrated the spirit of solidarity and the longstanding friendship between France and India.
Understanding France’s National Order of Merit
Established on December 3, 1963, by then French President Charles de Gaulle, the National Order of Merit is one of France’s two principal national distinctions. It is the country’s second-highest national honour, after the Legion of Honour.
The award recognises exceptional service by French citizens and foreign nationals across civilian and military fields, covering both public and private sectors. It has five grades: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr Shetty thanked the French government for the recognition and recalled the collective efforts made to support the French community during the pandemic. He said Narayana Health was pleased to provide assistance at a time when solidarity and mutual support were especially important.
He also credited the hospital’s doctors, healthcare professionals and support staff, acknowledging their role in making these initiatives possible.
The recognition highlights Dr Shetty’s contribution beyond clinical care, reflecting the importance of compassion, international cooperation and healthcare institutions’ role in supporting communities during times of crisis.
