India Leading the World in Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy, Says J.P. Nadda

India is fast becoming a global leader in regenerative medicine and cellular therapy, says Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda at IANR 2024, highlighting major breakthroughs in stem cell research.

India is rapidly positioning itself as a global frontrunner in regenerative medicine and cellular therapy research, said Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in a special video address on Friday.

Speaking at the 17th Annual Conference of the International Association of Neurorestoratology (IANR), held jointly with the 7th Annual Conference of the Society of Regenerative Sciences (India), Nadda praised Indian doctors and researchers for their pioneering work in stem cell and cellular therapy innovations.

“India is emerging as a global leader in regenerative medicine, with our scientists and clinicians driving breakthroughs in stem cell and cellular therapies,” Nadda stated, emphasizing that these advancements hold significant promise for treating neurological and orthopedic disorders—both priority areas for the government.

The two-day international conference, held from October 17–18, brought together more than 500 medical professionals, scientists, and patient advocates from India and abroad. The event served as a platform to explore cutting-edge research and applications in regenerative medicine and neurorestoratology, a field focused on restoring damaged tissues and improving neurological function through cellular therapy.

Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, addressing the gathering, commended the remarkable progress of Indian scientists in regenerative medicine. He underlined the transformative power of science and innovation in healthcare, noting that India’s research leadership is helping to redefine global standards in this domain.

Oram also urged the government to consider including cell therapy for persons with disabilities (Divyang citizens) under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, highlighting its potential to make advanced treatments accessible to millions.

Regenerative medicine, particularly through cellular therapy, offers new hope for patients suffering from chronic neurological, orthopedic, and degenerative disorders—many of whom were once considered beyond treatment. With India home to over 2.68 crore Divyang individuals, experts at the conference emphasized that such therapies could dramatically improve patients’ quality of life and functional recovery.

India now ranks among the top nations for scientific publications related to neurological conditions and regenerative medicine. Researchers attribute this growth to a strong ecosystem of medical innovation, robust government support, and international collaborations.

“Our work in regenerative medicine through cellular therapy is providing life-changing results for patients with no existing treatment options,” said Dr. Alok Sharma, representing the Society of Regenerative Sciences. “Under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has established world-class stem cell research centres and partnerships that position the country at the forefront of this medical revolution.”

With increasing investment in cell therapy, stem cell research, and clinical innovation, India’s medical community is set to play a defining role in shaping the future of global regenerative healthcare. The discussions and collaborations at IANR 2024 mark a significant step toward integrating these advanced therapies into mainstream healthcare, aligning with the nation’s commitment to accessible, inclusive, and world-class medical care.
