Kozhikode: Kerala is set to strengthen its transplant care infrastructure with the proposed Keralam Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant in Kozhikode, which is expected to be completed within 30 months.
The institute will be developed across 20 acres at Chevayur Golf Link Road with an estimated investment of ₹271 crore. The facility is planned as an advanced transplant and research centre, with comprehensive services for organ transplantation available within a single campus.
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan said bringing multiple transplant-related services under one roof could significantly reduce treatment expenses. According to him, the cost of treatment could fall to around one-third of current expenses.
The proposed hospital will have 350 beds and 10 operation theatres. It is also expected to undertake a substantial number of transplant procedures each year, including:
- 1,100 corneal transplants
- 520 kidney transplants
- 50 heart transplants
- 40 lung transplants
- 120 bone marrow transplants
A separate skin disease hospital, estimated to cost ₹35 crore, will also be developed on the Chevayur campus.
Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Heart Care Society, Satheesan said the government aims to position Kerala as a healthcare destination for patients from within India and abroad. The state plans to build on its climate and other favourable conditions to attract domestic and international patients.
The broader healthcare initiative will also include wellness and rehabilitation facilities. Centres offering holistic care for conditions such as stroke are planned as part of the programme.
Alongside expanding treatment infrastructure, the state intends to focus on prevention and early diagnosis through large-scale public health campaigns.
With the planned transplant institute, Kerala aims to expand access to specialised care while strengthening its position in advanced healthcare and medical value travel.
