Narayana Health Announces India’s First Nurse-Led Smart Hospital in Bengaluru

Narayana Health is set to introduce a new model of healthcare delivery with the launch of what it describes as India’s first fully smart, paperless hospital in Banashankari, Bengaluru. The upcoming facility will combine digital operations with a unique leadership structure that places nurses at the forefront of hospital management.

The announcement was made by Dr Devi Shetty, Founder and Chairman of Narayana Health, who said the hospital has been designed to redefine both patient care and healthcare leadership. Unlike conventional hospitals, the day-to-day operations and governance of the facility will be managed primarily by nurses, creating a direct pathway for them to move into senior administrative and executive roles.

The initiative seeks to address a long-standing gap in the healthcare sector, where nursing professionals play a vital clinical role but have limited opportunities to advance into leadership positions. By integrating operational responsibilities with clinical practice, the hospital aims to prepare nurses to become future hospital CEOs.

Explaining the concept in a social media post, Dr Shetty said, “In this hospital, only those who actually touch the patient will work. There are no receptionists, no secretaries, no scribes, and no HR or finance department. You’re going to take care of the patient, along with the doctors and technicians. But the entire operational management and governance of this hospital is handled exclusively by you.”

As part of the programme, Narayana Health plans to recruit 25 nurses interested in expanding their careers beyond bedside care. In addition to their regular clinical salaries, selected candidates will receive monthly management incentives while taking on administrative responsibilities.

The participants will also undergo an executive hospital administration programme at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, with the entire course fee funded by Narayana Health. The combination of academic training and hands-on operational experience is expected to equip nurses with the skills required for leadership positions in healthcare.

Highlighting the broader vision behind the initiative, Dr Shetty added, “We are not just hiring nurses for a new hospital. We are building the future leadership of global healthcare.”

The announcement comes as Narayana Health accelerates its expansion strategy. Earlier this year, the hospital group revealed plans to enter selected Western markets, identifying the United Kingdom as its first international destination. It has also committed an investment of ₹30 billion to strengthen and expand its healthcare network across India.

Established in 2000 by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, Narayana Health has grown into one of India’s largest hospital networks, operating more than 5,900 beds nationwide. The organisation has built a strong reputation for providing affordable healthcare, particularly in cardiac care.

The Banashankari smart hospital represents a significant shift in hospital management by combining advanced digital infrastructure with nurse-led administration. If successful, the model could reshape healthcare leadership in India while creating new career pathways for nursing professionals and enhancing patient-centred care.
