Ahmedabad-based Shalby Hospitals has announced a major national expansion strategy, with new multi-specialty hospitals planned in Lucknow, Kolkata, Nagpur, and Pune over the next two to five years. The move aims to strengthen its presence in Tier-1 cities and reinforce its position as a leading pan-India healthcare provider.
The group’s upcoming greenfield project at Mumbai’s Asha Parekh Hospital will increase Shalby’s total capacity to nearly 2,500 beds, up from the current 2,300 beds across 17 operational hospitals in India.
“Our next phase of growth is focused on Tier-1 cities,” said Shanay Shah, President of Shalby Hospitals. “Each new facility will have between 200 and 250 beds, which we find to be the ideal scale for maintaining efficiency, quality, and patient satisfaction. We prefer this model over massive 1,000-bed institutions, as it allows better scalability and personalized care.”
Shalby’s expansion roadmap will adopt a hybrid approach, combining both owned hospitals and asset-light models. The company typically invests around ₹1.5–3 crore per bed in metropolitan regions, depending on the city and infrastructure. In Mumbai, where an asset-light structure is being used, the investment per bed is closer to ₹1.5 crore.
This model, Shah explained, allows the group to maximize operational efficiency while maintaining cost competitiveness in urban healthcare delivery.
Globally known for its leadership in orthopaedic surgery—performing over 50,000 to 60,000 joint replacements annually—Shalby Hospitals has successfully transformed into a multi-specialty healthcare network.
The group now offers advanced services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, nephrology, organ transplants, and critical care. “Orthopaedics contributes about 35% of our overall revenue, while other specialties make up the remaining share,” Shah said. “We are now positioned as a full-spectrum healthcare provider.”
Innovation and technology remain key pillars of Shalby’s growth vision. The hospital chain has introduced robotic surgery systems, high-end CT and MRI imaging equipment, and state-of-the-art radiation therapy bunkers across its facilities.
To strengthen vertical integration, Shalby acquired a US-based knee and hip implant manufacturer in 2021, enabling greater quality control and affordability. Founded in 1995, the company maintains one of the lowest product recall rates globally, underscoring its commitment to precision and patient safety.
Affordability continues to be a cornerstone of Shalby’s healthcare philosophy. “Every new investment is evaluated through the lens of accessibility and patient benefit,” Shah explained. “Our goal is to ensure that high-quality treatment remains affordable. India offers one of the best quality-to-cost ratios in global healthcare, and we intend to preserve that advantage.”
To address the growing challenge of healthcare talent migration, Shalby operates the Shalby Academy, which focuses on training and upskilling nurses and technical professionals. This in-house program has helped the organization retain skilled staff and maintain attrition rates significantly lower than the industry average.
Shalby Hospitals continues to strengthen its footprint in medical tourism. With dedicated international outreach offices and frequent doctor-led consultation tours abroad, the group has built a robust global patient network.
“At some of our Gujarat facilities, over 60% of patients come from outside India,” Shah noted. “Medical value travel remains one of our strongest growth areas.”
With a well-balanced mix of measured expansion, innovation-driven technology adoption, patient affordability, and workforce development, Shalby Hospitals is poised to emerge as one of the most influential healthcare players in India’s next decade of growth.

By targeting a 200-250 bed model and combining asset-light and owned formats, Shalby’s strategy appears smart and scalable — if executed well, it could raise the bar for affordable, high-quality hospital care across India.
It’s encouraging to see Shalby Hospitals take bold steps toward a pan-India presence with new multi-specialty facilities in key Tier-1 cities — this kind of expansion brings greater access and advanced care closer to patients.
