Tamil Nadu has reinforced its position as the medical tourism capital of India, drawing nearly 25% of all international patients seeking healthcare services in the country. According to the state’s Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, the state welcomes around 15 lakh foreign medical tourists every year, a number that continues to grow thanks to its world-class hospitals and advanced medical infrastructure.
State Leads India’s Medical Tourism Industry
Citing figures from India’s Tourism Department, Subramanian highlighted that Tamil Nadu remains the preferred destination for patients from countries such as Sri Lanka, Singapore, Qatar, the UK, the US, Germany, and Australia. The state’s reputation for affordable, high-quality treatment and expert medical professionals has made it a global healthcare hub.
Cutting-Edge Facilities and Government Support
The Health Minister pointed out the presence of state-of-the-art medical facilities, including robotic surgery units at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Omandurar Estate. He added that the government’s continued investment in healthcare infrastructure is helping attract more patients from abroad as well as from other Indian states.
Future of Medicine Conference Showcases Innovation
Subramanian made these remarks while addressing the “Future of Medicine 2.0” international medical conference hosted by Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The event saw participation from 38 international delegates across nine countries and nearly 15,000 doctors and students.
The conference featured 46 exhibition stalls, including displays on AI applications in healthcare, and covered diverse fields such as medicine, dentistry, AYUSH, nursing, pharmacy, and rehabilitation science.

With a robust healthcare ecosystem, skilled doctors, and consistent government backing, Tamil Nadu continues to lead India’s medical tourism sector. Experts predict that the state’s share of international patients will rise even further in the coming years, cementing its status as the most trusted medical destination in India.
