In a groundbreaking advancement for healthcare, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, has achieved a medical milestone by performing Western India’s first robotic surgery for Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS) — a rare vascular condition that affects only 1–2 people per 100,000. The intricate, high-precision operation was led by Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Senior Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon, utilizing the Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.
The patient, 60-year-old Mahendra Sawant from Chunnabhatti, had been enduring severe abdominal pain, bloating, and vomiting for over a year, particularly after eating even small portions. Despite multiple consultations and medications, his illness remained unresolved, leaving him anxious and in constant discomfort. Seeking relief, he turned to Gleneagles Hospital, where his condition was finally diagnosed and treated.
According to Dr. Gandhi, performing MALS surgery poses significant technical challenges since the affected artery lies adjacent to the aorta.
“Robotic surgery offers enhanced dexterity, three-dimensional visualization, and unmatched precision, allowing us to safely manage such rare and complex cases,” he explained.
Unlike conventional open procedures that typically last around three hours and carry a higher risk of bleeding, the robotic-assisted surgery at Gleneagles was completed in just 48 minutes with minimal blood loss. The patient experienced a remarkable recovery—walking, eating, and remaining pain-free within 24 hours of surgery.
Dr. Anil Parakh, Head of Anesthesiology at Gleneagles Hospital, highlighted the importance of coordinated care during the procedure.
“This case required precise hemodynamic control and synchronized teamwork. Advanced anesthesia techniques played a critical role in ensuring the patient’s safety throughout the surgery,” he said.
Celebrating the achievement, Dr. Bipin Chevale, CEO of Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, remarked,
“This successful robotic MALS surgery underscores our dedication to bringing world-class surgical innovations to our patients. It marks a new benchmark in managing complex and rare conditions across Western India.”
Expressing gratitude, Mr. Sawant shared,
“For months, eating even a small meal was unbearable. After this surgery, I can finally enjoy food without pain. It feels like I have regained my life. I’m deeply thankful to Dr. Gandhi and the entire Gleneagles team for their care and expertise.”
