The Adani Group is set to expand its presence in West Bengal with a major healthcare investment in Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari laid the foundation stone for the proposed 2,000-bed Adani Arogya Mandir at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata.
Developed by the Adani Foundation, the project will involve an investment of more than Rs 4,000 crore and will spread across 51.75 acres. The planned facility is being positioned as an integrated healthcare and academic medical centre serving Kolkata and the wider Eastern India region.
The project is expected to handle more than 200,000 inpatients and over 2 million outpatients annually, while generating around 10,000 jobs.
“Mr Adani, we look forward to your presence to rebuild Bengal. The final vision is not just a hospital campus, it will be a fully integrated healthcare city. Nowhere in India is there a hospital of this high standard. The hospital will give a big boost to medical tourism. This is historic, meaningful and an auspicious day for us. Viksit Bharat 2047 can happen only if Bengal develops,” said Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Minister of West Bengal.
1,000 beds for economically weaker sections
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said the proposed institution will operate as a not-for-profit medical centre. Half of its total capacity, or 1,000 beds, will cater to economically weaker sections eligible under state and central health insurance schemes.
“The Adani Arogya Mandir will be a world-class, not-for-profit medical institution that will have 2,000 beds – with a thousand beds catering to economically weaker sections of society, eligible under State and Central health insurance schemes,” Mr Gautam Adani, Chairman, Adani Group said.
The first phase of the hospital will have a strong focus on cancer care, offering advanced tertiary and specialised treatment.
The wider campus will include step-down and transitional care facilities, along with a Meditel and Vishram Gruh for relatives of patients.
Medical education and research
The project is also being designed as a medical education and research hub. A medical college will offer 150 undergraduate seats annually, more than 100 postgraduate seats and over 40 super-specialty seats.
A nursing college and institutions for allied healthcare and paramedical education are also planned. Residential facilities for healthcare professionals and their families will form part of the campus.
Research programmes will cover areas including genomics, precision medicine, artificial intelligence, biomedical informatics, clinical trials and molecular sciences.
The Adani Foundation has engaged Mayo Clinic Global Consulting in the US and SingHealth in Singapore to provide expertise in clinical care, academic medicine, digital health, quality, workforce development and innovation.
Adani outlines Rs 1 lakh crore Bengal roadmap
Alongside the healthcare project, Gautam Adani announced an investment roadmap of more than Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035.
The planned investments will span ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, transmission and distribution, roads and bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centres.
The Group has also announced initiatives linked to Kolkata’s cultural heritage, including support for the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat, restoration of the historic Writers’ Building and promotion of Bengal’s Durga Puja ecosystem through Adani Pujo Preview.
The proposed Arogya Mandir is expected to provide a base for future Centres of Excellence across medical specialties in its second phase. By expanding advanced healthcare, education and research capacity within the region, the project aims to strengthen Kolkata’s position as a major healthcare destination in Eastern India.
The Adani Arogya Mandir combines healthcare infrastructure with medical education, research and specialised treatment. Its scale, investment and planned academic ecosystem make it a significant addition to Kolkata’s healthcare infrastructure and part of the Adani Group’s broader investment plans for West Bengal.
