India has reached a new milestone in advanced eye care with the successful execution of the country’s first 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography integrated with iStent surgery at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt. The breakthrough highlights a major step forward in minimally invasive glaucoma treatment.
The innovative procedure was conducted by the hospital’s Ophthalmology Department, which utilised a newly installed stand-mounted Spectralis imaging platform in combination with a high-end 3D surgical microscope. This advanced setup allowed surgeons to visualise ocular structures in real time during the operation, significantly improving surgical precision.
Glaucoma is among the most common causes of permanent vision loss globally and is often detected late due to the absence of early symptoms. By enabling real-time mapping of aqueous humour outflow channels, 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography helps clinicians accurately identify functional pathways and perform more targeted interventions using iStent technology.
Being the first of its kind in the country, this integrated approach establishes a new standard for glaucoma management in India. The achievement positions the Armed Forces Medical Services as a leader in advanced ophthalmic innovation and is expected to contribute to better long-term outcomes for both defence personnel and civilian patients.
