A 41-year-old man with multiple serious health conditions underwent a successful laparoscopic procedure at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, where doctors removed his gallbladder along with more than 4,000 gallstones.
The case involved significant medical risks as the patient was morbidly obese and had obstructive sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and acute kidney injury. The surgery was performed in 45 minutes under general anaesthesia by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. B.D. Pathak, Senior Director, GI, Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.
The patient sought medical attention after experiencing severe abdominal pain for about a week. He also reported nausea and indigestion.
Scans revealed a severely inflamed gallbladder filled with thousands of tiny stones and thick biliary sludge. Doctors determined that surgery could not be delayed because the condition could have led to serious complications, including infection, gallbladder rupture or blockage of the bile duct.
Despite the high stone load and the patient’s medical condition, surgeons removed the gallbladder and more than 4,000 stones using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
According to a hospital statement, the patient made a stable recovery with support from the surgery, nephrology and internal medicine teams. He was discharged a few days after the operation.
