Magnet Hospitals launches with doctor and nurse ownership model, eyes expansion across India

Healthcare industry veteran Dinesh Madhavan has introduced a new hospital network, Magnet Hospitals, with a unique ownership model that offers equity to both doctors and nursing professionals. The initiative aims to reshape India’s corporate healthcare landscape by encouraging greater participation from frontline medical staff.

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Magnet Hospitals has begun operations with eight hospitals across the city. The venture has received an initial investment of ₹224 crore, led by Madhavan along with clinician partners, two high-net-worth individuals, and a family office.

Unlike the traditional corporate hospital structure, Magnet Hospitals plans to tackle the healthcare sector’s ongoing talent retention challenges by allowing nurses to become co-owners and participate in hospital management. The network also intends to create leadership pathways that can help nursing professionals move into senior management positions, including chief operating officer and board-level roles.

Speaking about the immediate roadmap, Madhavan said, “To me, the next three-four months would be stabilizing, consolidating current (operations). After that, there will be an expansion span from around November to the next 24 months.”

The hospital chain is focusing on mid-sized facilities with 80 to 100 beds, providing secondary and tertiary healthcare services closer to where patients live. Rather than expanding rapidly across multiple cities, the company plans to first establish a strong presence in Bengaluru before entering other markets. Madhavan expects the network to double its current size over the next 30 to 36 months.

“I want to make proof of concept in a city, which I believe I should spend time in, rather than spending time catching flights,” said Madhavan. “Once I have the proof of concept, true to its word, Magnet Hospitals should be able to attract other clinicians to join our platform,” he added.

To support its next growth phase, Magnet Hospitals intends to raise an additional ₹350-400 crore. The company is expected to approach social-impact investors who value better clinical outcomes alongside financial performance.

The network currently has 150 clinician partners and aims to increase that number as it expands. Three experienced healthcare professionals have joined its board as clinical champions, overseeing six major specialties such as orthopaedics, critical care and neurosurgery. Their responsibilities include developing specialist teams, promoting research, and implementing standardized clinical practices across all hospitals.

With its clinician-led ownership approach and emphasis on empowering nurses through leadership and equity participation, Magnet Hospitals is positioning itself as a new model for healthcare delivery. If successful, the initiative could influence how future hospital networks attract talent and build sustainable healthcare organizations in India.
