SNEHA NGO organizes #JungAgainstJunk campaign across Mumbai, plans to reach 3000 families

Mumbai, September 22, 2026. As part of the Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month), Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA) is organizing a city-wide campaign called #JungAgainstJunk. Through this campaign, the NGO will be raising awareness on nutrition for the youth such as nutritious diet for adolescents, iron-rich foods for fighting anaemia, and finding alternatives to junk food. As part of this campaign, the NGO plans to reach more than 3000 families this year across various vulnerable regions in the city.

The NGO has currently partnered with more than 19 Ganesh Mandals in Dharavi, Kandivali, Kalwa, Mankhurd, Govandi, Mumbra and Wadala. SNEHA volunteers along with government officials will be conducting several activities such as Nutrition Thali and Bazaar, puppet shows, street plays, film screening, games and other activities highlighting and sharing information regarding good nutrition and diet. The NGO will collaborate with community members and is focused on helping the youth in these areas understand the importance of eating nutritious food during festivities and throughout their lives.

Speaking on the campaign, Dr. Rama Shyam, Programme Director, Empowerment, Health and Sexuality of Adolescents, SNEHA said, “In a recent survey that we had conducted, we observed how through community-driven interventions and collaborative efforts with the government, there were significant improvements in maternal and child health through our sustained efforts. Through these sustained efforts, we helped communities reduce malnutrition, anaemia and actively utilize public health system services which in turn also improved maternal and child health outcomes.

As the festive season has begun, we would like to take this step even further to sustain these improvements during this season as well as beyond it. Junk food is one of the biggest hurdles in improving one’s health and healthy eating habits need to be promoted among today’s youth. We are confident that through this campaign and our collaborative efforts, we will be able to sustain this momentum to improve children’s and their family’s health. And break the intergenerational cycle of poor nutrition, with young people leading the way to become adults practising responsible diets!”

In a report titled Sustaining Impact Through Partnerships 2026 released by the NGO recently, it highlighted that through community-driven as well as public system driven interventions, stunting reduced from 30% to 21%, wasting from 14% to 11% and underweight from 28% to 22% between 2021-2026. The survey also noted that appropriate maternal referrals (the proportion of pregnant women confirmed to have reached the right referral facility) rose from 76% to 87%. Through these collaborative efforts, the NGO aims to sustain the momentum and continue improving health outcomes across vulnerable regions in the city.
