In a landmark step for hearing care, doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, have carried out the country’s first Smart Cochlear Implant surgery on a three-year-old with severe hearing impairment.
The child, diagnosed with over 70% hearing loss, was advised cochlear implantation after conventional hearing aids proved insufficient—making this advanced intervention the most effective option.
What distinguishes the Smart Cochlear Implant is its ability to evolve over time. Unlike traditional implants—where only the external processor can be upgraded—this next-generation device allows internal firmware updates. This means patients can benefit from improved sound-processing technologies in the future without undergoing repeat surgeries.
Designed to function much like a smartphone receiving software updates, the implant ensures sustained performance and long-term adaptability as medical technology advances.
Doctors highlight that successful outcomes depend not just on surgery but also on comprehensive post-operative care. This includes detailed audiological evaluations, device mapping, and ongoing speech therapy to support hearing and language development.
The procedure was led by Janardhan Rao Jagini, Head of ENT and Senior Cochlear Implant Surgeon, along with Shivaprasad Boddupalli, Chief Audiologist and Cochlear Implant Clinical Specialist, and team member Divya.
Experts stress that early implantation plays a critical role in improving speech and communication skills. With intervention at the age of three, the child is expected to show significant progress in hearing and language abilities in the years ahead.
