KIMS Saveera Hospital has successfully treated a patient with a brain aneurysm using a minimally invasive endovascular coiling procedure, avoiding the need for conventional open brain surgery.
The patient, Rameshwar Reddy, a farmer from Tadipatri, was admitted after experiencing an intense headache accompanied by vomiting and dizziness. Diagnostic imaging, including a CT scan and CT angiogram, identified a brain aneurysm—an abnormal bulge in a cerebral blood vessel that can lead to life-threatening bleeding if it ruptures.
The intervention was carried out by Consultant Neurologist Dr. Karthik Reddy and Interventional Radiologist Dr. Pritviraj. Rather than opening the skull, the medical team used an endovascular approach. Through a small puncture in a blood vessel in the groin, a catheter was carefully advanced to the affected artery in the brain, where tiny platinum coils were deployed inside the aneurysm. The coils reduce blood flow into the weakened vessel, lowering the risk of rupture.
Brain aneurysms often remain undetected until symptoms develop or the vessel ruptures. Prompt diagnosis and timely intervention are critical, as a rupture can result in severe brain haemorrhage and other neurological complications.
According to the treating doctors, the patient also had a history of hypertension and had not been taking medication regularly. They noted that poorly controlled blood pressure is a significant risk factor for weakening blood vessel walls and increasing the likelihood of aneurysm formation.
Compared with traditional open surgery, endovascular coiling is a less invasive option that typically results in reduced postoperative pain, no large surgical incision, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery for appropriately selected patients.
The doctors advised the public not to ignore warning signs such as a sudden, severe headache, persistent vomiting, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, or weakness in the arms or legs. They stressed that these symptoms require immediate medical evaluation, as early treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
The availability of neuro-interventional procedures such as endovascular coiling at KIMS Saveera Hospital expands access to advanced stroke and aneurysm care for patients across the Rayalaseema region. Previously, many patients had to travel to larger metropolitan centres such as Hyderabad or Bengaluru to receive similar treatment. Following the procedure, the patient recovered well and was discharged in stable condition.
The case highlights the growing reach of advanced neurovascular care beyond India’s major cities. As minimally invasive techniques become more widely available in regional hospitals, patients can benefit from faster access to specialised treatment, improved clinical outcomes, and reduced dependence on long-distance travel for complex neurological procedures.
